Daniel Salatin is the son of Joel Salatin, an innovative farmer, writer, and speaker. As the third generation on Polyface farm in Swoope Virginia, he has grown up in the family business.
Starting out helping with chicken harvest in diapers, then moved on to his own rabbit business at 8 years old, to currently being the day-to-day operations manager of the farm. Polyface has grown from just a dream to now farming over 1,500 acres raising and marketing: Salad Bar Beef, Pastured layers, turkeys and meat birds, Pigaerator pork, and many other complimentary animals and products through on-farm sales, restaurant, retail, and neighborhood deliveries, as well as nationwide shipping.
Growing up in the pastured/regenerative farming life Daniel has witnessed firsthand how these practices can and have changed the landscape.
Developing new farms and overseeing livestock operations is just part of his role. A large part of his farming life is spent leading, teaching, and mentoring new farmers through Polyface’s Stewardship (Intern) program that has well over 175 “graduates.” This is one of his true passions- seeing these young farmers (some not so young!) learn and master new skills in the farm setting. He lives on the farm in VA with his wife of over 18 years Sheri and their three kids, Travis, Andrew, and Lauryn.
