Darryl Patton, also known as The Southern Herbalist, has been hunting, gathering and working with medicinal plants for the past twenty-five years on Lookout Mountain in the Southern Appalachians. Darryl is an ND as well as a Master Herbalist and brings many years of experience to the field of alternative medicine. Known for his easy-going approach towards teaching the identification and uses of medicinal plants, Darryl has been called a walking encyclopedia of herbal folklore.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Darryl is the author of, “Mountain Medicine, The Herbal Remedies of Tommie Bass,” published by Natural Reader Press and has appeared on Alabama Public Television and the Comedy Channel. Darryl operates a wilderness survival training school in the mountains of North Alabama where he teaches a wide range of classes such as medicinal plant walks and also offers one-on-one apprenticeships for those seeking to further their knowledge in the world of herbs and alternative medicine.

Who remembers our first year of HOA apparel?! Throwing it back today with the 2017 HOMESTEADER sweatshirt from the very first year of conference. Maybe one day we’ll bring it out of retirement. But until then, I’m loving it on this very cool Virginia day!

What apparel do you want to see for the 2020 online conference?! We’re hoping to set up a shop where we can offer a quick turn around time for the online event. Maybe even some sweatshirts this year!

While many of our hands-on workshops had to be cancelled this year, the change made to the workshop with Hand Hewn Farm is an exciting one!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
While humanely slaughtering the homestead hog is the most important step in the home butchering process, because of the logistics of working on the fairgrounds we haven't been able to offer attendees the opportunity to attend an actual hog slaughter before now! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The educators at Hand Hewn Farm are opening up their butcher shop to welcome the Homesteaders of America and show us how to slaughter a hog with very little infrastructure while still fully utilizing the whole hog to the max! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
